Caterham U16 football team off to Wembley finals, Caterham U16 football team off to Wembley finals
Caterham Education Centre’s recently formed U16 football team, The Auroreans, have sealed their place at the Wembley finals, having won their group set at the Panathlon London South regional SLD PI (severe learning difficulties and physical impaired) football event.
Panathlon is a national charity which gives young people with disabilities and special educational needs the opportunity to take part in competitive sport.
The team did really well in all of their games. They won one game having scored a massive 9 goals and drew 2.
Team captain KN (and the only girl in the team) said: “There’s not been one second where I haven’t been hugely proud of my teammates. The last match we played was amazing and holding the trophy and saying I was team captain was one of the best feelings.
“I get along extremely well with every player in the team. Being the female team captain I’m grateful, not only because I get to tell them how to improve but for them to tell me how I can do better - as a friend, player and the team captain (which they’re always doing!). There’s no one I’d rather have by my sides and have tell me how to improve than the people that surround me.
“So, I’d like to say a huge thank you to my school, teammates and fabulous coach for bringing on this amazing feeling.”
The whole school were behind the team. Charlie created a poster. Many of them went to watch and student Evan took photographs. There were big celebrations back at the school with the team proudly showing off their medals and cup.
Neil Watson, PE Teacher and Football Coach said: “I think that this was an amazing accomplishment for these young CEC Auroreons, considering the limited amount of time they’ve all had for training. We’ve come a long way in a short space of time, and I’m very honoured to be a part of this journey and huge achievement. The guts and determination shown on the day was immense. Yes, there’s excitement, but I just need the squad to remain level-headed as we prepare for the finals on 19 May.”
The Panathlon finals day promises to be truly inspiring. The unique chance to play in the shadow of the legendary stadium is certain to be a day to remember for all the team.
